Hiring When Choices Are Limited

June, 11 2018

Are you a small business owner who is having a hard time hiring new employees? Well, you’re not alone. The U.S. economy is on an upswing and the unemployment rate (in May 2018) is at its lowest since 2000 at 3.8 percent. That’s a great thing, but for a small business owner, it may mean there are not enough qualified candidates to fill your open positions.

So what do you do to make good hires when the choices are limited? There are a number of ways to find the best talent out there; here are some ideas:

  • INVEST MORE IN THE SEARCH – According to recent findings of the Business & Economic Outlook Survey, 30 percent of business owners say they don’t have enough workers. Do you have standard hiring procedures or do you use a company to help you find workers? As a business owner, you should be using one or both of these methods to make sure you have the best people working for you. Even when you have enough employees, you should always be recruiting and looking ahead in case you run into unexpected turnover.
  • OFFER BETTER BENEFITS – Hiring the best people means offering not just a little more money, but offering better benefits. Most employees are looking for health insurance, but in addition, employees say they look for companies who offer better benefits, such as gym memberships and additional vacation or sick days. Adding a benefit a competitor doesn’t offer may help your company win over better talent, which could pay off in the long run.
  • OFFER WORK/LIFE BALANCE – It seems these days everyone is looking for work/life balance and companies are responding to that. Some companies allow their employees to work from home once a week or offer summer hours. If you’re having a hard time finding people to fill positions, you may want to consider making your company more work and family friendly.
  • BUILD A GOOD COMPANY CULTURE – Why do so many people want to work for Google or Apple? These brands are known for being innovative and fun places to work. You can do the same for your business. The better your company’s culture is, the more people hear about it and want to be a part of it. No matter what business you run, when people hear it’s a good place to work, they are more likely to apply, giving you more hiring options.

Hiring talented and hard working employees doesn’t have to be difficult, if you work at it year-round. At Brigade Bookkeeping, we’ve been building a company known for being the best at keeping books, and a great place to work. Not only do we love what we do, we know the importance of sharing that with the ones we love the most, our family and friends.
